Generic Lasix is a cheaper version of Lasix, a very effective and trusted diuretic medicine. Generic and brand name Lasix have identical active ingredient Furosemide, and Furosemide will produce the same therapeutic effect as the brand name drug. Generic medications can usually be purchased for a fraction of the cost of their branded counterparts. Because generic medications are often much cheaper than their branded counterparts, many people choose buying generic medications online, and many insurance companies actually require that they be used. The combination of generic substitutions and reference pricing would give patients an incentive to choose the cheapest product, while helping them avoid unnecessary costs.Furosemide (Generic Lasix), is a potent diuretic used in the treatment of high blood pressure and other conditions that require the elimination of excess fluid from the body. These conditions include congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease. Furosemide is indicated in adults and pediatric patients for the treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and renal disease, including the nephrotic syndrome. Oral Lasix may be used in adults for the treatment of hypertension alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
How does Furosemide work?Furosemide works by blocking the absorption of salt and fluid in the kidney tubules, thus causing increased excretion of water, sodium, and chloride into the urine to be expelled from the body. The diuretic effect of Furosemide can cause body water and electrolyte depletion. Furosemide is particularly useful when an agent with greater diuretic potential is desired. How should I take Furosemide?Take Furosemide exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will adjust the Furosemide dosages of this strong diuretic to meet your specific needs. You will probably be started at a single dose of 20 to 80 milligrams. If needed, the same dose can be repeated 6 to 8 hours later, or the dose may be increased. Your doctor may raise the dosage by 20 milligrams or 40 milligrams with each successive administration-- each 6 to 8 hours. Generic Lasix warningsSudden alterations of fluid and electrolyte balance in patients with cirrhosis may precipitate hepatic coma; therefore strict observation is necessary during the period of diuresis. Supplemental potassium chloride and, if required, an aldosterone antagonist are helpful in preventing hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis. If increasing azotemia and oliguria occur during treatment of severe progressive renal disease, furosemide should be discontinued. All patients receiving furosemide therapy should be observed for these signs or symptoms of fluid or electrolyte imbalance: dryness of mouth, thirst, weakness, lethargy, drowsiness, restlessness, muscle pains. Information for patientsPatients with diabetes mellitus should be told that furosemide may increase blood glucose levels and thereby affect urine glucose tests. The postural hypotension that sometimes occurs can usually be managed by getting up slowly. Potassium supplements and/or dietary measures may be needed to control or avoid hypokalemia. Urine and blood glucose should be checked periodically in diabetics receiving furosemide, even in those suspected of latent diabetes. Furosemide may lower serum levels of calcium and magnesium. |
