Generic Valtrex is a cheaper version of Valtrex, a very effective and trusted herpes medicine. Generic and brand name valtrex have identical active ingredient Valacyclovir, and Valacyclovir will produce the same therapeutic effect as the brand name drug. Generic medications can usually be purchased for a fraction of the cost of their branded counterparts. Because generic medications are often much cheaper than their branded counterparts, many people choose buying generic medications online, and many insurance companies actually require that they be used. The combination of generic substitutions and reference pricing would give patients an incentive to choose the cheapest product, while helping them avoid unnecessary costs.
Generic Valtrex (Valacyclovir) is an antiviral drug. It slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus so that the body can fight off the infection.
Valacyclovir is indicated for the treatment of herpes zoster, for the treatment or suppression of genital herpes in immunocompetent individuals and for the suppression of recurrent genital herpes in HIV-infected individuals and is also indicated for the treatment of cold sores.
Valtrex is most effective if it is started within 48 hours of when the rash first appears.
Valtrex is usually taken three times a day for a week to treat shingles. To treat genital herpes it is usually taken twice a day for 5 days. For cold sores, Valtrex is usually taken for one day only.
Herpes infections are contagious and you can infect other people, even during treatment. Avoid letting infected areas come into contact with other people. Wash your hands at regular intervals to prevent transmission.
Ceasing therapy too soon may cause this treatment to be ineffective. For best results, take this medication at regular, paced intervals throughout the day and night.
Valtrex may not work after 72 hours past onset of shingles or genital herpes or after 24 hours past the onset of recurring genital herpes. It may not be effective in suppressing genital herpes beyond 1 year.
